Assignment:To design a DNA sequence conferring to the model organism Arabidopsis thaliana the functionality to effectively eliminate and detoxify airborne formaldehyde.
Background: Formaldehyde is known as a harmful substance to the human body and cause sick house syndrome. If there was a plant which is able to absorb formaldehyde and remove it effectively, we might be able to prevent sick house syndrome by putting the plant in the room. However, general plants has little function to absorb formaldehyde. In GenoCon, we would like you to design DNA sequence to add such function to a model plant.
Tips: Research groups led by Professor Izui of Kinki University , Professor Sakai , and Professor Kato (currently Professor of Kyoto Gakuen University) of Kyoto University are actually trying to create such dreamlike plants. They found out that by inserting two HCHO decomposing bacterium genes into a plant (Arabidopsis thaliana), the plant got a function to remove HCHO in the air. The research teams re-design a plant pathway by adding two genes. (See details of the research) In GenoCon, we accept optimum DNA sequences which could be performing much better in Arabidopsis thaliana. DNA sequences which are designed by new methods to add functions to the plant to absorb and remove formaldehyde effectively are also accepted.
Conditions: (1) To design DNA sequences to add formaldehyde tolerance to Arabidopsis thaliana. DNA sequences under 2,000 bases are subject to be screened by experimental review. However, even if sequences over 2,000 bases are subject for Excellent Originality Award and Best Originality Award. (2) A vector to be inserted into Arabidopsis thaliana is pMDC32.
Submission: To create a program by JavaScript and submit all items including Input data, Program, and Output (designed DNA sequences). Please write a report to explain about your designed DNA sequnences in `Wiki` by drawing chart, figure, etc. (Report should be written in either English or Japanese.)
Please see the detailed information
Designed DNA sequences which pass the document review are to be subjects for experimental review. Qualified designed DNA sequences for final review are selected by experimental review.
